About Hoofddorp

Hoofddorp is the main town in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer in North Holland in the Netherlands. Hoofddorp was founded in 1853 when the Haarlemmermeer was drained. There are only 78,000 residents in Hoofddorp in 2009.

Hoofddorp was one of the villages that were founded after the Haarlemmermeer was drained but Hoofddorp was quick to improve and has been considered as an important place in the area. It was in the late nineteenth century when the area has been included in the Defense Line of Amsterdam. There was a fort built next to the main canal and then two batteries were erected in the area as well. A large dike called the Geniedijk or Engineer’s Dike was also constructed to connect the batteries and the casemates that were also created.

This is the world’s biggest structure built from synthetic materials like factory-cut polystyrene foam with a polyester skin.

Hoofddorp is also connected via main roads in the country. The A5 traverses the town that leads to Haarlem, Amsterdam and The Hague. Government offices have made Hoofddorp their home.
