About Nijmegen

Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. It has celebrated its 2000th year in 2005. It is both a municipality and a city with more than 730,000 residents in 2011. It is located in the east near the German border.

The earliest account of Nijmegen was in the 1st century B.C. when a Roman military camp was set up. This location was strategic to the Romans since it offered a great view of the surrounding hills and a spectacular picture of the Waal and the Rhine valley. To this day, the glory of the Roman Empire may still be seen with fragments of the old city wall and foundations of an amphitheatre. There are also historical structures and buildings in the city like the Carolingan Chapel, the 15th century town hall and the Grote Markt. The St. Stevenskerk Church courtyard, rows of 17th century houses and so many more historical places may be seen in this glorious city.

Why renting in Nijmegen is a great idea

They say that living in Nijmegen is like taking a trip back in time with all the classic and historical structures and buildings. This is one of the reasons why many choose to stay for good in Nijmegen. The climate in the city is the warmest in the Netherlands especially during the summer months where the highest temperatures are recorded. But of course, weather at these parts of the continent is prone to shifts and it could be sunny one minute and overcast the following hour.

One of the best reasons to stay with the family in Nijmegen is Radboud University Nijmegen which is the first Catholic university in the Netherlands. You will also find the HAN University of Applied Sciences, several intermediate-level vocational schools and secondary schools. The city is also home of the Max Planck Institute of Psycholinguistics as well as the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. The city oozes with art and culture. There are quite a number of museums like the Africa Museum, Museum Park Orientalis, Valkhof Museum, the Velorama, and the House of the History of Nijmegen. The city is also famous for its International Four Day March Nijmegen event held every third Tuesday in July. This local event has become international with an average of 40,000 participants in over 30 countries.

Transportation around the city is well-developed with 4 major train stations, a number of bicycle paths, a river route for freight transport and buses that operate inter-city. A new bridge was opened in the city in November 2013 called the Stadsbrug; it connects the western part of the city to the northern shore. A cycle highway was also upgraded to encourage more people to ride their bicycles anywhere they want to go. Cycle highways are also available to connect one city to another.
